OPSA 2012 Report
Advances in surgical techniques, technology, and anesthetics have made many procedures, formerly restricted to inpatient facilities, now possible in the office setting. The office setting creates a unique set of challenges for health care providers, including less legal and regulatory oversight and the possibility of more fragmented patient care. This also presents an opportunity for Fellows to evaluate the quality and safety of the care they are providing for their patients, as well as anticipate and lead the design of assessment of ambulatory women’s health that is likely with federal and state legislation.
For this purpose, ACOG set up a voluntary self-assessment for providers to complete regarding patient safety in their own practices. This Office Patient Safety Assessment (OPSA) survey aims to gather data, raise awareness about patient safety concerns in the office, and to give office practices some benchmarking data. Due to the low number of respondents and lack of statistical significance, extrapolating conclusions from the data is limited. Nevertheless, the data can be useful to assess what new patient safety activities can be incorporated into outpatient practices.
The Office Patient Safety Assessment (OPSA) has been available online through Survey Monkey (www.surveymonkey.com) since February 2010. The summaries and tables in this document represent the 61 submissions ACOG received January 2011 through April 2012.
